Downtime
What a wagon costs while it stands still
The way to a workshop is rarely the shortest one. A path, a locomotive, staff — and the wagon is out of circulation the whole time. A great deal of that work can be done at the siding instead, which is why we are on the road.
The transfer
A wagon that has to be hauled to a repair shop needs a path, a locomotive and staff before anyone has so much as touched it.
The circulation
While the wagon sits in the workshop it is missing from the fleet. The load waits, the customer waits, and somebody has to find a replacement.
The small defect
A missing step, a handhold, a brake component: work that should not send a wagon across the country.
What we are called for
Three things people call us about
What we do at the siding, we do in full — under the rules that apply to it and with the qualifications those rules require.
Repairs on site
Draw and buffing gear, repair or replacement of steps, handholds and stanchions, wheelset checks, lubrication work and brake components. Plus the general wagon examination and the brake overhaul to BR0, VPI-EMG.
Wheel profile measurement, lubrication, BR0 brake overhaul, three-month revision extension
Wagon inspector (TKC) under the AVV
Wagon inspections under the applicable AVV rules: technical operating safety before departure, brake tests, assessment of damage and wear, fitness-to-run examination and NDT visual testing (VT).
Operating safety, brake test, fitness to run, NDT VT, visiteur
Graffiti and wagon markings
Proper removal with collection trays and with agents that do not attack the paint or the material. Afterwards the markings, plates and paint touch-ups are renewed to the applicable requirements.

No job is too small for us, and no challenge too large.
That is why we come out for a single wagon — and why we step in at short notice when somebody on your side is unavailable.

The two of us
You reach the people who turn up
Rail-tec is two people. Whoever answers the phone is also the one standing at the wagon afterwards — there is no switchboard in between.

What people ask us on the phone
- Where does Rail-tec work?
- Rail-tec KLG is based in Frauenfeld in the canton of Thurgau and works mobile across Switzerland and Germany: the service team travels to the wagon — to the private siding, the station or the works area. The aim is that a freight wagon does not first have to be hauled to a workshop to be repaired.
- What work does Rail-tec carry out at the wagon itself?
- Work on draw and buffing gear, repair or replacement of steps, handholds and stanchions, wheelset checks including wheel profile measurement, all lubrication work, repair and replacement of brake components, the brake overhaul to BR0 under VPI-EMG, the general wagon examination and the three-month extension of the revision deadline.
- Does Rail-tec also supply wagon inspectors?
- Yes. Rail-tec carries out wagon inspections under the applicable rules of the AVV: checking technical operating safety before departure, brake tests, identifying and assessing damage and wear, the fitness-to-run examination and NDT visual testing (VT). The wagon inspector (TKC) qualification is also available when a customer is short of staff at short notice.
- Which certifications does Rail-tec hold?
- Rail-tec KLG holds the technical assessment (FtB) based on the VPI European Maintenance Guide, the ECM certification under Regulation (EU) 2019/779, and approval for non-destructive testing under NDT-Railway / DB 90703. The company is listed in the VPI register of workshops.
- Does Rail-tec remove graffiti from freight wagons?
- Yes — using collection trays and cleaning agents that do not attack the wagon's paint or material, and in compliance with environmental and safety regulations. In the same visit the markings, stickers and plates are renewed to the applicable requirements and paint touch-ups are carried out.
- How is a call-out invoiced?
- Unless something else has been agreed, Rail-tec invoices on a time and materials basis; travel and journey time counts as working time. A contract comes into being through a written offer and its written acceptance, and the standard currency is the Swiss franc. The full conditions are in the German terms of business.
- Is a call-out worth it for a single wagon?
- Yes. Rail-tec will come out for one wagon; «no job is too small for us» is the principle the firm works by. Whether a call-out makes sense in a particular case depends on the defect and on the location — both of which we can settle on the phone.
